In a groundbreaking move, Qantas has unveiled a new initiative that allows its Frequent Flyer members to earn status points without stepping foot on a plane. The program, described as a first for the popular loyalty scheme, aims to reward members for their engagement with the airline’s broad network of partners.
Status credits, a key aspect of the Frequent Flyer program, are crucial for members looking to retain or upgrade their membership tier. These credits are now tied to Qantas Points earned across eight different categories, including banking, insurance, retail, and entertainment.
"We expect this will be particularly appealing to our ‘frequent buyers’ who might not fly as often but are very engaged with the program and our hundreds of partners", said Andrew Glance, Qantas Loyalty CEO. "While flying will always be at the core of the program, this offer is about expanding the ways we recognize our members both in the air and on the ground."
How It Works
Members who register for the offer under the "My offers" tab by October 31 can begin earning status credits on non-flight activities. The promotion allows participants to accumulate up to 110 status credits, with different earning rates depending on the category:
- 20 status credits for every 1,000 Qantas Points earned in Cards & Banking, Utilities & Services, and Insurance categories.
- 10 status credits for every 1,000 Qantas Points earned in Hotels & Travel, Fuel & Car, Food & Wine, Retail & Shopping, and Leisure & Entertainment categories.
Each category can only be used once, limiting the overall status credit earning potential to 110 credits.
Boosting Member Benefits
The initiative is designed to help members fast-track their annual status and contribute to their Lifetime status balances by the end of the year. Glance emphasized that this new way of earning reflects the evolving needs of Qantas members, stating, "Members are already earning two-thirds of their Qantas Points on the ground, and this offer now makes those everyday activities even more rewarding."
This latest initiative follows other recent efforts by Qantas to reward loyalty. Over the past year, the airline has offered several Double Status Credit promotions and gifted bonus status credits to active members as a gesture of appreciation.
Eligibility and Timing
To qualify, members must activate the offer through the Qantas website by October 31, 2025, and earn Qantas Points across the eligible categories before December 31, 2025. Achieving Silver status requires 300 status credits, while 700 credits are needed to reach Gold.
With this innovative approach, Qantas is redefining the Frequent Flyer experience, enabling members to benefit from their everyday spending habits while maintaining their status with the airline.
